[Asset] - Handheld Time-Space Manipulation Device

Welcome to today's news update regarding the work in progress Handheld Time-Space Manipulation Device currently under development by modeller and forum member AngelorD. The weapon was inspired by the game Portal, and will be implemented as a weapon with different attachments. Each attachment will give the weapon a unique time-space manipulation ability, such as teleporting and time travelling.

Screenshots
Shown below are several screenshots of the weapon. It is being modelled in SketchUp, after which it will be exported to 3D Studio Max in order to be animated. It is the first weapon the author has made, which makes the results all the more impressive. Please keep in mind that this is only a selection, for the full range of screenshots please visit the forum thread here.

That's it for today's news update, if you want to see more or have some feedback for the author, please make sure to drop by the forum thread here.

Wow, the gun looks amazing. But how are you going to make it time travel ?

I think that's just a matter of map design as opposed to any sort of coded 'time travel'.

Example:
Player arrives at a level where the base is destroyed, bodies littering the cratered ground, small fires all around, etc etc. He goes to what's left of the base's research lab where he was supposed to pick up the time travel attachment, finds it and attaches it.

He then uses it to travel to the past resulting in the player being moved to a section of the map that is hidden. This section has an intact base and instead of dead bodies you have live AI. With foreknowledge of what's going to happen he kills all the NK and saves the day!

Hurray!

And uh... just had to add this:

"I'm making a note here: Huge success."

wouldn't work, because if he went back in time the base wouldn't be destroyed when he first gets there.. because hes already warned the base. but then he wouldn't go back in time... therfore the base couldn't be warned...

basically time travel is impossible

Offtopic:

"basically time travel is impossible " ^_^
That's not fully the truth, because we can't travel backwards in time, it doesn't mean we can't travel forwards in time. I believe it is even done with a atomic clock which was send very fast flying around the world in a rocket. When it returned to earth it was 1 second younger then all the other atomic clocks...
Although this is something I heard from a friend, I can't remember all the facts so maybe I've to travel back in time and listen very good to him before confirming this... Oh wait! Not possible! Tongue

On-topic:

Your model look absolutely great!! I'd love to see a time travel weapon in Crysis! Good luck with it.

To take this to an even nerdier level, you CAN travel backwards in time but CANNOT travel forwards in time. Also @ big fish, you assume that going back in time takes you to an alternate dimension, which is not necessarily the case.

I'd be happy to discuss this further over PM Wink

I like the sleak design of the model, even though it could use abit more meat on it, still very nice Smile

Actually, EVERYONE travels forward in time. If you increase your velocity relative to another observer, time advances at a slower rate for you. If that happens to be at your departure point, then when you return you will find yourself 'in the future'. Time will have passed faster there than it did for you.

@Lord Jon: What you are referring to is actually any clock that leaves our planet and it's the other way around. Time passes slower for those deeper in a gravity well. Clocks in orbit (or at any higher altitude) will advance at a faster rate than those here on the ground. The difference is in nanoseconds, so it would take nearly 2 thousand years (I think) to add up to a full second. This is gravitational time dilation.

Edit: Oh, and to whoever said time travel was impossible in the first place, it's a fricken game so it bloody well IS possible. We can throw paradoxes right out the window if we want Smile

We live frame by frame in the 3rd dimension. Our lives however, are based on our memories, and as the memories are a compilation of 3 dimensional frames, we actually live in the 4th dimension. You can travel through time, both backwards and forwards (as all reactions and consequences are predicted at the beginning of time), but you would never realize it.

Because you cannot change the 4th dimensional strand of time, you cannot remember traveling through time, as time is memory, and your memory is stored in the 3 dimensional world.

If you want to truly travel through time, you will have to move through the 5th dimension, which opens up the idea of different possibilities. This means that you can mimic the idea of "changing" time, but your movements will only be predicted in the 6th dimension, which is the local dimensional curve.

For more information, see this video - Youtube - The ten dimensions
Although the video does make a "mistake" concerning the 5th dimension. You cannot diverge from the already predicted 4th dimensional line, you have to go back to the beginning in order to tempt fate.

But we digress. If you guys want to discuss this, feel free to create another thread, I'll be happy to take up arms against your realities, and pit them against my own.

Yeah my "continue over PM" was a subtle hint in that direction already Wink

Also I think there already was a thread about that some time ago.
