I was starting to get worried... ATI was pwning Nvidia until recently when the 260 55nm, 285, and 295 were launched. Welcome back, Nvidia.

Side note: SLI/Crossfire:
4870x2 in Crossfire = wtf happened, performance of a single 4870 (Not a x2!)
Same with 4850x2 and GX2 in Sli/Crossfire.
295 in Sli = finally a usable 4 gpu solution. Crysis is now playable on Very High @ 2500 x 1600, although it's running into a gpu ram limitation (ONLY 4gb of gddr3....), and also a CPU limitation with an i7 oc'd to 4 ghz. O_o

Pre 295 everyone was comparing the 4870x2 to the 280... which was stupid. The 280 is a single GPU card, it should be compared to another single GPU card (the 4870). The truth is, nvidia has been on top since the 8800GTX released, ATi has come close, but hasn't surpassed nvidia's cards.

Two GTX295's does not give you 4gb. It equals 896mb.

SLi does not pool the available VRAM, but rather mirrors it. Otherwise, how would the GPU's know what to render?

What Cri2T said is true, in SLI/CrossFireX, the other cards copy the data the primary card renders. The extra VRAM/bus width don't get used.

The 9800GX2 was a failure due to driver issues, it was almost like having an ATI card. ATI's 4850 x2 and 4870 x2 were actually better dual chip cards, the micro-stuttering that the previous dual chip cards had were gone. NVIDIA learned their lesson and now the GTX 295 is the best GPU out there, even Quad-SLI works great with these cards. An i7 overclocked to 4 ghz is not a noticeable limitation to a pair of GTX 295's at all, it's hardly there. Get that i7 even further and it will be totally gone.

I'd consider those pretty low end by now, maybe mid-range, but still pretty close to the bottom.

For what resolution and what game should be this list? For 1920x1200 definatly not. Roll Eyes

I believe this list is based on card performance across all settings and games. It's not a benchmark, it's a comparison for future buyers. Wink

That's correct. This is where these cards stand overall.

ATI is supposedly going to release a new GPU HD 4890 to compete with Nvidia's new GPUs. I see price drops Big Grin

Not really, instead NVIDIA is going to release the GTX 275 which will be in the middle of the GTX 260 and GTX 285. It is actually what the same GPU as on the GTX 295, except the GTX 295 has two. That means these specs (clock speeds can change however).

Chipset: GT200b (B3 most likely)
Transistor Count: 1.4 Billion
Manufacturing Tech: 55nm
Memory Type: GDDR3
Memory Size: 896 MB
Memory Interface: 448 bit
Stream Processing Cores: 240
Texture Filtering Units: 80
Raster Operators: 28 (may be increased to 32 like on the GTX 285)

The price is expected to be around $250, and the GTX 260's will drop to around $180. This is a rather dumb move, watch the 4890 beat the upcoming GTX 275. Instead NVIDIA should drop the prices on the GTX 260 CORE 216 55nm to $180 (which they will) since thats where the 4870 1 GB is priced at. The GTX 285 should come down to around $280 which is where the 4850 x2 is priced at. Then the GTX 295 should come down to $450, a little bit more than the 4870 x2. If and when the 4890 drops in price, bump down the GTX 285 a bit more.

On what resolution? If it's something like 1024x768, it's still a low to mid-range card. A high-end card should be able to pump out around 30fps average on High @ 1280x1024/1680x1050.

That's mid range imo. Especially now that there is a card setup that can run Crysis on Very High @ 2500x1600 and maintain 20fps. (295 Sli)

A single GTX 295 will go over 30 FPS on 2560 x 1600 on very high with no AA. Even a 4870 x2 averages above 30 FPS on those settings (usually). A second GTX 295 will put you near 50 FPS average.
