E3 2008 Coverage
This month Crysis Warhead was unveiled at E3, where reporters were able to take the role of Sergeant “Psycho” Sykes in one of the early missions in Warhead. The mission begins with players being able to take to the wheel of the brand new ASV while taking enemy fire not only from the ground but from fighter jets dropping bombs all around you.
Many new elements of Warheads gameplay were introduced and as many players found out, the new AI is more than a match for even some of the most skilled players. In fact, IGN’s PC staff awarded Crysis Warhead the Best PC First Person Shooter of the E3 and the Best PC Graphics Technology of E3 awards and Gamespy gave Crysis Warhead the designation as a Best of E3 title for the PC.
Many members of the media attended, and we’ve compiled a list of where to read the previews, so don’t just take our word for it, have a look at the impressions below!

E3 2008 – Demo Level Summary

Level Name: Shore Leave
Mission Time of Day: Late afternoon till evening
Enemies: North Korean Infantry, Reinforcement Trucks, LTV’s and heavy vehicles
Mission Description
Psycho and a crashed pilot are on a run to reach the evacuation point in time before the North Korean army overruns the area. After making their way along the road towards the landing zone, marines are already awaiting their arrival near the VTOL.
Unfortunately the North Koreans have planned a huge attack on the LZ in order to prevent the pilot from evacuating the area. Sykes and the rest of the marines are forced to defend their position in order to secure air support in a further mission.
After an action packed fight with KPA forces assaulting the Marines from all directions, the LZ is finally secured. Psycho moves onto the harbor where he attempts to intercept Lee’s cargo, which JSOC believe is a nuclear warhead destined to explode in the middle of the US carrier fleet…

Community Q&A Part #2
In the last monthly update we introduced you to a new community question and answering. Due to the huge amount of questions we had to pick a few from the list which we have answered in our first part below. Within the upcoming weeks more and more questions from us are going to be answered, so just keep on posting them in your favorite forums.
| quote: |
1. Is there new vegetation in Warhead or do you just re-use everything? (Cheses, Crysisnews.de)
Answer: In Warhead you will encounter new environments, vegetation and also plenty of other new objects. Additionally we have improved many of the existing assets of Crysis to match up with the quality of Warhead.
2. Are there going to be more multiplayer game modes than IA and PS? (Dark Sith, Crysisnews.com)
Answer: Yes, on game release we will have an additional brand new game mode. We will reveal more details later on, but during its development we really focused on fast and intense action, team play and a better integration of the Nanosuit as game play element.
3. How far did you think of modding support for Crysis Warhead? (Höhlchen, Crysisnews.de)
Answer: We are aware that this topic is crucial and has a high priority for us. We want to provide you the best possible modding support for Warhead and are currently looking for several ways how to achieve this goal. We will talk more about that once we finalized our plans and are confident with the result.
4. Did you get rid of the trick jumps that have been introduced in Crysis? (ScoR, Crysis-HQ.com)
Answer: In the first case the trick jump was reported as a bug where players could fly almost through the whole map in Crysis multiplayer. This bug has been fixed with a previous patch already. After internal discussions we came to the conclusion that the remaining possibility to strafe jump for a limited range influences the gameplay style in a positive way, so we kept it in to support a faster pace.
5. Have you had a look at the custom configurations created by the users or did you create your settings completely on your own? (Baggibox, Crysis-HQ.com)
Answer: We did a lot of research for Warhead and also had a close look on almost all available tweak configurations that have been created by the users. We took some of their work as inspiration and tried to build upon what they achieved with their optimization work.
6. Can we expect more polygons to be used on objects, better textures and a better optimized game than in Crysis? (Baggibox, Crysis-HQ.com)
Answer: In Warhead we use the most recent CryENGINE2 version which is further optimized. It is possible now to show more overall action on the screen such as explosions, AI enemies, objects and more with an increased frame rate.
7. Is the AI going to behave more realistically or does it still act sometimes inhuman like in Crysis? (TheUnusual, Crysis-HQ.com)
Answer: The AI code has been improved in several areas especially the reactions of the enemies when the player is using cloak mode or a silencer on his weapon. These have been re-worked to act more realistically.
8. When playing Psycho, are you going to see already known locations of Crysis or are they going to be replaced/skipped? (M3nTo5, Crysis-HQ.com)
Answer: We definitely put in some moments that are linked to specific events for those who played Nomads story in Crysis before. It is up to the player to find them all.
9. Is a demo of Warhead planned? (Crysis2142, Crysis-HQ.com)
Answer: Currently we do not plan to provide a demo prior to the release of Crysis Warhead. Nonetheless we are evaluating options for a demo version that may come at a later point.
10. Will we be able to dual wield different weapons; like a pistol in one hand and a sub machine gun in the other? (UltimaRage, Crysis-Online.com)
Answer: Even though this is a nice idea, we did not implement this for Warhead. The AY-69 was especially created for Psycho to match his personality since both are deadly, fast and promise a lot of action.
11. How many new weapons/game modes/vehicles can we expect? (Espenol, Crysis-Online.com)
Answer: In the last Monthly Update we already introduced you to the AY-69 weapon which can be dual-wielded. Today we provided more exclusive information on the ASV (Armored Scout Vehicle) Anti Human version. Expect some more unveilings in the near future.
12. Will Crysis Warhead include any levels that contain an urban environment? (ninotek, Crysis-Online.com)
Answer: Warhead takes place on the same island as Crysis, so we adjusted the level settings to match up with the overall environment. We've got open range passages but also ones that provide close combat action to the player.
13. Will we see any significant gameplay tweaks or adjustments? Will the nanosuit functions remain the same or will they be altered for balancing issues? (Jiggles, Crysis-Online.com)
Answer: The core Nanosuit functionalities are the same since we are pretty happy with their set-up and usability. We did some very minor tweaks, but they have almost no effect on the gameplay style.
14. Will the singleplayer campaign include any group/squad fights, as opposed to the primarily individual fighting style seen in Crysis? (thmage, Crysis-Online.com)
Answer: We do not want to reveal too much, but it may be that there are specific scenarios in some of the levels that offer fighting and mission accomplishment in a larger group.
15. Will we be seeing any improvements in the "vehicular damage" system? (Jiggles, Crysis-Online.com)
Answer: For both Warhead singleplayer and multiplayer we looked into the vehicle code and improved it in various areas. We improved the physics for almost every vehicle and also adjusted the proxy settings which are responsible for the collisions and the respective damage settings. We wanted the vehicles to behave more realistically, but still in an area where they are really fun to drive. So we tried to balance both realism and fun gameplay.
16. Will there be tag bullets in Crysis Warhead? (thebusdriver, Crymod.com)
Answer: We still have the tactical attachment in Warhead which can be used in the same way it was possible in Crysis. Although Sykes is not a real tactical guy, he rather tends to blow things up.
17. Are there any plans to update the editor with the release of the new game? (factorx, Crymod.com)
Answer: With the Sandbox 2 Editor we follow the same plan with the modding support. The topic is at the top of our priority list and we want to ensure that we provide you with a solid base to develop your levels and mods on. Still we are not yet in a position where we can talk about the details, since everything is still in progress.
18. Is there going to be a bigger map pool for multiplayer? (Dark Sith, Crysisnews.com)
Answer: We have planned plenty maps for launch, including re-worked and improved levels you already know from Crysis. More details to the brand new maps we will have included are going to be revealed shortly.
19. Will there be different versions of Warhead, one cut for Germany and one uncut for the rest of the world? (jupiee, Crymod.com)
Answer: Like in Crysis we will provide one global version of Crysis Warhead.
20. Will Warhead become stealthier and can you drag dead bodies? (jupiee, Crymod.com)
Answer: Of course every individual player can still pick his favourite tactic, so it is definitely possible to plan an approach carefully or play stealthy again, if you wish to. True to the Crysis sandbox approach you can also play Warhead the “Sykes” way with lots of action and explosions. Dragging away dead bodies is something we have not considered.
21. Will there be a broader range of enemies in this game? (I am scientist, InCrysis.com)
Answer: During the Warhead campaign we have prepared a few surprises for you, but it is better to play the game for yourself when it is released to see what kind of challenge awaits you there.

Warhead Exclusive: ASV Anti-Infantry Introduction
Exclusively featured in this update for the community is the recently introduced ASV (Armored Scout Vehicle) in the Anti-Infantry version which is one of the new vehicles the Warhead package includes.
| quote: |
Technical Specification

Weight: 9.5 tons
Crew: 3 (1 driver, 2 passengers)
Type: Light Armored Vehicle
Drive: 4-wheel drive
Main weapon: advanced mini gun; high fire rate; low accuracy; extreme damage output against infantry and non-armored vehicles
Description
The ASV in its Anti-Infantry edition comes with a highly advanced mounted mini gun which has an extremely high fire rate and is ideal to be used against any kind of personnel or vehicles with no armor improvements. Due to its low accuracy the mounted weapon is ideal for close to mid-range combat situations.
With the ASV being a light armored vehicle it is fast on the road but also provides enough protection against attacks from light enemy fire. Be sure to avoid tank shells as they will likely cause heavy damage.

Introducing “Eddy Dew” as new Crytek Lead Community Manager
Today we would like to take the time to inform you about the latest happenings around the Community Management Team of Crytek. With this message we want to introduce you to our new Lead Community Manager “Eddy Dew” who recently joined the Crytek family.
Within the upcoming weeks and months Eddy will slowly take over the complete Community Management work, since Alexander “Cry-Alex” Marschal will join the Game Design department at Crytek. For the last few months we have been eagerly searching for someone who could take over that role and we are happy that we found that person with Eddy.
Prior to joining Crytek, Eddy worked at “Blizzard Entertainment Europe” as Senior Communications Specialist and “Tournament Gaming Limited” in association with Valve as Operations and Customer Services Manager -- so you can see he has a lot of experience in managing teams and communities.
So please welcome Eddy as new head of the Crytek Community Management Team. We have prepared a short Q&A with him which you can read below:
What is your full name?
Answer: Eddy Dew
How old are you?
Answer: 22
What was your job before you joined the Crytek family?
Answer: I have over 4 years experience in the games industry and have worked at Blizzard Entertainment Europe and Tournament Gaming Limited in association with Valve.
What are your favourite games?
Answer: Warcraft III, World of Warcraft, Team Fortress (Classic and 2) and of course Crysis.
What are your favourite movies?
Answer: Train Spotting, True Lies, Final Destination Trilogy
Any message to the community?
Answer: I’d just like to say I’m really happy to be here, and I’m really looking forward to getting to know the entire community and becoming part of it myself!
Also Alex “Cry-Alex” Marschal wanted to say a few words to the community:
| quote: |
“Dear community members!
Now the time has come to move on and gain experience from a different part of the games development. Over the past few years I’ve been the Community Manager for Crytek’s first two game titles “FarCry” and “Crysis” and really enjoyed every single bit of it.
It has been a great job to be in such close contact with the world-wide community members either via the Crymod modding portal or the many other fan site forums spread throughout the internet.
You are a great community with a lot of passion and engagement – with lots of active and talented members. I’ve been in quite a few communities as a gamer before I joined Crytek back in 2003 as QA Tester, but I’ve never seen such a friendly and committed community before in any other game.
Sure, there were times when things did not run perfectly fine and we also had one or another let down during my time as Community Manager. But I always had the very satisfying feeling that you didn’t let down, neither on Crytek nor on any games we released so far – that is what I call a true fan and community member.
There are so many things I could talk about, which I’ll keep in my mind for the rest of my life. Things like the first community summit for Crysis, which was a huge success in my eyes and I couldn’t be happier to see all the fans standing in front of me, smiling and eagerly awaiting the action packed days we had prepared for them.
Or the Beta of Crysis when thousands of fans played the Multiplayer part over and over again and gave lots of constructive feedback which helped us improve the game for release.
I could go on for quite a while and list things I remember when thinking of the Crysis development. Basically it makes me quite sad to leave everything behind we have built up over the past few years, but I am pretty confident that Eddy will do an excellent job. We picked him wisely and he is already really looking forward to taking over this position.
Long speech, short story, I would like to thank everyone for their great commitment. I’ll be missing the work a lot, but I am also very happy to be part of the design team which takes care of the upcoming Multiplayer releases.
So keep your eyes open, I’ll still plan to be as active as I can on the fan site forums, on the Crymod modding portal and of course on our new community web site we are currently setting up (which will be absolutely great btw!).
All the best for the future, treat Eddy nicely – he deserves it
So long,
-Alex” |
