Chain Mods would like to announce a new mod in development
This game includes the Lara Croft character, although the gameplay will tend to veer away from the usual Tomb Raider adventures.
Lara Croft is sent on a journey to Greece to find a priceless Vase called Athena’s Basin. Whilst travelling across the coast of Greece, Lara’s plane has a bizarre explosion in one of the engines which forces the plane to crash on a remote island. Little does she know that there is a greater treasure in the heart of the island... For this island is no ordinary island; it's an island of Lost Dimensions
The game will feature several different levels to span the twists of the story; The player will be immersed in wonderful environments, from dusty desert caves to thunderstorm flooded rainforests.
The player will engage in heavy combat and light puzzle elements.
the gameplay features some cool new designs along with the stunning visuals provided by the engine:
- a new Lara Model to play as (possibly in 3rd person)
- new weapons
- interesting story with more depth than the usual Tomb Raider games, and some good twists
- a gameplay that will require more than just shooting and puzzle skills
- - expect nothing in this world to follow the physics you would expect! and make sure that you have all your senses at the ready - including your sixth sense - cos your gunna need more than just sight and sound when your in Pitch Black GunFire
Looks mightily impressive, is that an in game image of Lara?
Have you thought about copyright issues at all?

Indeed, you should change her name to "Lara CrofD" or something like that and make sure she doesn't look exact like the real copyrighted one.
Unless you're absolutely certain the tomb raider copyright holders don't mind you making this mod.
You should go for the heavy-inspired thing instead of using the real ones, just to be safe.
Anyways good luck, but it would be a sad thing if they decide to kill off your project when it's about to be released

May I suggest using the latest model of Lara - that is used in the upcoming game "Underworld" - because it is looking much more realistic than previous models. Finally they got away from this "tit monster" look of older games.
The game is not out, yet. But you can see the "new" Lara in many previews in the current game magazines (03/2008)

Yeah beware the copyright issue, basing the look and feel on tombraider is one thing, but actually having Lara Croft running around looking, to be honest %100 exactly like Lara Croft is gonna be a problem. Its a shame, because I am probably one of the worlds biggest Tomb Raider game series fans. Just change the name slightly and say its based on Tomb Raider and you will be fine
. Really looking forward to this one. Lost alot of my younger life playing the TR games lol and am looking forward to doing it again with your mod
.
If your really hellbent on keeping the name and the exact look etc, you could maybe try get intouch with CORE or EIDOS and ask for permission to use the name and the design for your mod, making sure to push the fact its free and it will be as faithfull as possible to the TR series, you never know, they might say yes
.

thanks for the positive replys so soon
i forgot to add a disclaimer about using a copyright character - but how come other mods including dinosaurs and robots are allowed to use names?
though i didnt want to have to write to Eidos in fear that they would say no, im reconsidering doing so... we'll yet you all know whenever we hear from them

Lol, yeah the MechWarrior mod i believe has clearance, as they also have the pre-SDK, and the Jurrasic Park mod I don't believe actually uses the copyright name, everything just "happens" to look like Jurrasic Park...which is fine. You should definatly get intouch with Edios or Core and ask...if they say no, then just do as suggested and change the name and the appearance slightly, if they say yes then you got your Lara Croft

As for "Robots" we have written permission from Microsoft, who owns the IP in the digital realm (wizkids owns the "paper" rights.) JP will have to speak for themselves. I really like the idea of this but I don't think there is really any reason to make it a tomb raider mod, I think you should just invent your own charachter and avoid the legal issues all together.

Im sure there is no legal issues as long as we aren't making any profit then that fine.

Unfortunately this is not entirely true. IF the owner of the IP allows you to use this copyright protected content then you are fine in developing the mod, but to be honest if I where you I would contact them and ask for permission.
I've seen too many mods already closing their work due to copyright infrignment because they just started workign on the mod and did not ask for persmission - some of them already have been pretty far.
So, even though I really like your concept, you better check if you are allowed to use it

This looks really cool.
I'm glad people are really taking advantage of the outstanding Cryengine 2 and that Crytek are supporting them.

It looks so damn awsome!
I like the nice model of lara
I hope you guys get permission for it!
Goodluck!
Jurassic Park is using the name only, and so is MechWarrior. Their universes, events, characters, stories, etc are going to be completely different. That's how they can get away with it. The mods have to be at least 75% different from the originals to avoid possible legal action AFAIK. At least that's the way it is with plagiarism laws, but don't quote me on that because "plagiarism" and "copyright infringement" do sound the same on paper, but are legally two different things.
Anyways, you have some very good artwork there, I do hope this project doesn't get the axe before it gets started.
