Urban Havok WIP Level UPDATED (1.0.4 Now Available)


Urban Havok WIP map.

Hello everyone, I'm working on a short single player map, It features close quarters urban combat. This level has more alike with a Call of duty 4 level than Crysis. Gone are the lushes jungles to be replaced by concrete and rubble. You must fight your way through the city to the US Headquarters. You and 20 or so other US marines must accomplish this. On your way you will encounter tanks and air support.

I made a quick test map for you, the full map will have invisible boundarys restricting player movement, don't worry though because its hard to go the wrong way, just don't go into any buildings and don't go off into the desert.

If you like this Call of duty style gameplay then just post and tell me! if you hate it, I'll just stick to making jungle maps llike everyone else. People are spitting out tons of generic jungle maps (which is great), I just wanted to do things a little differently...

If I turn it off it doesn't look as dusty and harsh, the fog also reduces lag, a tightly packed level like this can really lag up especially with the 100 or so NPC's in there. I may lessen the fog if people can get over 30 FPS with this map. What Kind of FPS are you getting (in the actual game, not the Sandbox2).

Also the screenshots make the fog seem more close up than it actually is ingame. Just try the test map... The Screenshots are taken at Medium quality, so it will look even better on most peoples systems (and mine to when I get an 8800GT and 2GB more RAM)

+ yes, this is all done with standard crysis assets, no extra moddling etc. has been done.

One question. Why restrict the movement? That's why we have Crysis, so we can go anywhere and explore anything without those annoying fences we can't jump over for some reason like in CoD4.

You could still make a city map and make it look like Call of Duty 4, but I would suggest not to restrict the player and let him roam around the city environment free of boundaries.

good point but I can't make it as linear if the player can do what they wan't thats where the invisible boundary's come in,

+ chicken 2 that looks very odd, try turning off HDR and see if the fog looks as it does in the screens, 20FPS? On high thats quite good. The fog looks crappy on yours though and where is all that gorgeous specular I added to make the rocks shiney? If more people try this test map and it looks as bad as chickens there must be a problem...

Ok I fixed the problem, Set shaders to medium everything else can be on high however. Its to do with the HDR and the fog, will fix soon thanks.

Also if the AI's don't attack on the first load please reload the level and they will work fine!

Ok I fixed the HDR so it looks like normal, will reupload soon so you can enjoy HDR goodness on this level.

First of all, on very high/high it looks as chicken2 showed, weird, however, on medium it looks perfect, the only big problem is that it has weird hitches..

I imagine you know what your doing and you probably played COD4 so il spare u the "there should be more explosions like assault and plains etc.." talk, I hope you gl o:

Cool idea... a couple suggestions, if I may...

- ditch some of the US soldiers that don't do anything and replace them with more enemies

- don't use invincible enemies (this really bugged me)... I went across the rooftop where the
VTOL was, and down into the building next door... I proceeded to empty hundreds of rounds
into the guys in there (and several grenades), but they just kept getting up... that's no fun Crying

- I almost stopped playing immediately when I tried to enter an open building and was
blocked from doing so... make a map and some objectives to guide the player. And if you
want to keep people out of buildings at least put some closed doors in.

This is just a beta remember I'm just getting a feel for how people want levels to go down.
There should be a constant barrage of explosions, this may not be working for some reason however. I have a track view sequence which plays on load and activates explosion objects, I find this way easier and quicker with more control over the timeing. If it does not work however then I will switch to fg. If you turned off the game for one invisible wall you'd have a heart attack if you ever tried playing a Medal of honor game lol

Release 1.0.2 will include the fixes you guys want.

@-HiViH- Can you explain what you mean by hitches? stuttering perhaps, what are you specs. Mine has none...

Okay I have corrected all the quick problems

- Doors on all buildings
- No Invincible AI's
- Fixed HDR Gray smoke and black sky problem

Looks great! I am downloading now! This really remeings me of "Blackhawk Down", even the whole premise of it sort of does. I'll let you know more thoughts on it once it finishes downloading.

EDIT:

Cool. I just played a little of it so far, but I wanted to let you know a few suggestions.

-- The background artillery is a cool idea, but it is very repetetive, which isn't really a big deal.

-- I like your placement of the shools, it made them look like many different houses and things, but maybe a few buildings made of solids spread about would subtract from the feeling of the same thing over again.

I can't wait to play more and to d/l the release when all of it is tweaked to perfection Wink JK but maybe close to it Smile

Nice map! I LOVE the change of setting, not to demean the paradise lsot theme though. One problem though, apart from the friendly AI not doing much. The map fails to load the artillery effect for me. But it's spelt artilary for some reason...

Also, the ground explodes as if it's snow when you shoot at it.

there are many improvements but at this point Id optimize it.. you can change the veg view distance ...ect
the AI is eating the engines resources.. Id make the AI spawn once you turn corners..
once thats done.. turn down the fog multiplier so the distance isnt greyed... now you could add some rolling clouds/fog/smoke effect !!!

nice man, but id turn the fog down a bit and try using alternatives to make it not just look... foggy, but instead dusty and slightly foggy.. if ya know what i mean

TANKS! This map needs 1 or 2 custom archetype tanks with 5x normal health. Make it a massive battle. Concentrate every soldier in the center of the map!

I'll dl tomorrow. Looks amazing.

I meant like, if you played GEOW or The Witcher before the patches, the fps is ok and then it just jumps done for a sec..
anyhow now its a bit better i think, at start, with VH setting, you couldnt play at all, it was about 15FPS, then it got into a steady 25, strangly enough medium shaders or even low didnt really increase the framerate at that time..

The AI is walking into walls, and enemys dont attack until attacken, as for the VTOL coming from the sky, it gets stuck in a weird way at where he is supposed to land and after a bit he explodes.. i dunno if that was suppose to happen so Im just letting you know Tongue

Anyhow, I have high hopes for this and will do as I can to assist, again, good luck.

I have a HD3870, E6550, 2G of RAM.
